Week 5 Challenge

GROUP ASSIGNMENT: Due 2nd June.

Working in a group of 2, you are to put together (4 x 8s) approximately 20 - 30 secs (depending on the song) of a choreographed routine for a song by Busta Rhymes

You will be assessed on musicality, creativity, and feeling and synchronization as a crew.

The more that you try to make choreography, the easier it will become over time. Remember to groove and use isolations and keep your movements simple - This will assist you with working easily together and not over complicating things.

Ideally you should all have input into this assignment and it should not be all weighted one one person.

Today was choreography to be learnt from Sin City and the breakdown of the main elements of the routine

Crab / Pas De Bouree / Reebok / Typewriter.

1. Video: Practice all of the above moves this week. Train each move, one per day and video tape yourself. So in total, there should be 5 videos of approximately 30 secs each. -- This can be done to any speed song, however I recommend doing it to a slow song so that you can control and understand the movement of your body whilst doing this.

Use Hiphop songs for Crab / Reebok and Typewriter. (the legs cris crossing over)
Use House for Pas De Bouree

There is NO solo video this week

2. Research:
Find me a music video or video of a performance of the pioneers
Phuong - Rocksteady Crew / William - Electric Boogaloos / Vivian - Elite Force Crew
(Post this in the Fb thread)

3. Research - Find a house or hiphop song from the 80s or 90s that you like.
Suggestions for starting points - Busta Rhymes, Nas, Pete Rock, Dilla, Biggie, Das Efx, (Use the related videos) Post this in the fb thread. --> You must tell me why you like this song.

Other notes:

  • Class rates will be $50 p/month to be paid on the first week of the month or $15 weekly.
  • It is cheaper to pay per month obviously, but I will only accept it on the first week as it becomes difficult to manage who has paid.I'm not a huge fan of weekly, because monthly shows me commitments and dedication.

They may not be the best crew in Japan.

Hint: Pick a song that is suitable tempo to assist you with this, (ie slower is better)
L:  Learn a funkstyle foundation
Please choose a foundational move from popping, locking or breaking (1 of each) -- (There are tonnes to choose from) , To assist with this, I will give you lists to choose from below, research them on youtube on how to do them and practice and demonstrate in class. These are all simple movements and are considered foundational. (The list is not exhaustive, however please choose from these)

Locking
Lock / Pace / Uncle Sam Points / Scooby Doo / Scoo bot / Stop and Go / Kick Walk / Sneak / Funky Guitar / Hand Claps (Giving 5)

Popping
Fresno /
old man / scarecrow / toyman / puppet / robot / Fillmore / Twist-o-flex / Ticking

R: Research
Find a crew or dancer that you like to watch from their showcases or battles. Share this video on this post as a comment and also discuss why you like to watch that particular battle / showcase. Your peers will also be asked to comment on these videos and say what they do (or don't like about the same showcase)

So in summary, tasks for this week
1) Demonstrate your homework with a video (up groove, down groove)
2) Learn 2 funkstyle foundations (1 from popping, 1 from locking)
3) Share a video of a crew or battle that you like to watch and discuss why.

From next month, I will start monthly challenges in addition to your weekly work (Think of it as assignments with your home work -- but there will be ample adjustments to the amount of work adjust so that it all balances out)
